Sutlers

Minimize

Any 16th century army relied heavily on civilian providers of essential goods and services for many critical needs. These victualers or "sutlers" (a term which actually originated in the Lowe Countries as soetelaar) included brewers, merchants, crafts persons, cooks, laundresses, armourers and much more. At a School of the Renaissance Soldier event, sutlers are equally as important. Just like in period, at the Actions of the Lowe Countries they are following the camp to cater to the needs of our soldiers, and are a very important part of our program!

Use the options below to filter by category of goods, sort by various items or to search for specific words.

If you have handcrafted period-appropriate goods that you would like to sell at an Actions Past Event, please send an email to Sutlers@ActionsPast.com to learn how you can be included in this listing.

My shop includes several different items, including Knives, "Long Knives", Langes- and Grosse- Messers, Costrels (leather water bottles), shoes, and pouches. I also make several other items, such as dice and small metal items for camp and character. Prices for knives and costrels run from $40 and up; long knives from $120, and the messers start at about $300. Each item is priced individually, and of course, I am happy to do custom orders! Send me an email at sgainbrachta@yahoo.com to discuss your wants, and we can see what I can make for you!

Lodema the Potter

Foremost among our sutlers is Lodema Epperson (otherwise known as Lodema the Potter!). Lodema has been a fixture at Renaissance Faires, SCA events, and the Great Dickens Christmas Fair for years, and is known and loved by many. She has participated in nearly every School of the Renaissance Soldier event, selling her beautiful handcrafted pottery items and charming us all with her outgoing ways and cheerful attitude.

Recently, Lodema has designed a line of historically correct pottery, inspired by the classic works of Siegburg, Germany, which she sells exclusively at the Actions of the Lowe Countries. The items include plates, bowls, beakers, mugs, pitchers and much more, all of the highest quality, offered at a very reasonable price! Lodema is happy to receive inquires by phone at (888) 823-7048.
